Giovanni Gabrieli – Canzon primi toni a 8 (1597)
Published in Sacrae Symphoniae in 1597, Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon primi toni a 8 is a fine example of Venetian polychoral music. Written for two four-part instrumental choirs, the piece combines lively rhythms, contrapuntal interplay and rich eight-part textures. The alternating dialogue between the two choirs makes it particularly well suited to performance by two recorder consorts.
Instrumentation
The piece is arranged for eight recorders divided into two four-part choirs:
Choir I
-
Cantus I – Soprano Recorder
-
Altus I – Alto Recorder
-
Tenor I – Tenor Recorder
-
Bassus I – Bass Recorder
Choir II
-
Cantus II – Soprano Recorder
-
Altus II – Alto Recorder
-
Tenor II – Tenor Recorder
-
Bassus II – Bass Recorder
Each choir forms an independent SATB ensemble. The two groups alternate, respond to one another and join together in full eight-part passages, creating the characteristic sound of Venetian polychoral music.
