Making Early Music Together – Even When You’re Playing Alone

JoinTheConsort is a personal music project dedicated to Renaissance and Early Baroque consort music, with a particular focus on recorder ensembles.

The idea grew out of a simple experience: I have always enjoyed playing Early Music with other musicians, but finding enough players for larger ensembles is not always easy.

In particular, I have long wanted to play some of the magnificent music written for double choirs. Works by composers such as Giovanni Gabrieli are especially fascinating to me. But when your recorder group consists of five, six, or seven players, performing music written for eight, twelve, or even sixteen parts is simply not possible.

Now, in retirement, I finally have the time to explore this music in a different way.

The Idea

JoinTheConsort provides digitally produced play-along tracks for recorder players who want to explore Early Music beyond the limitations of their own ensembles.

The principle is simple: You play one part, and the recording plays the others.

Each track contains all the parts of a composition except the one you choose to play yourself. This allows you to become part of a complete consort, whether you are practising at home, preparing
